New warden scheme launches in West Berkshire
Three new neighbourhood wardens have started patrolling the west Berkshire parishes of Tilehurst and Holybrook, making a big difference by tackling the small problems. The team of Sue Reilly and John Harris, supervised by Paul Buckley, have been working with residents to clean up the streetscene, engage with local youths, and create a safer environment to foster a new sense of community. Sovereign Housing Association has teamed up with West Berkshire Council, Tilehurst and Holybrook Parish Councils, Thames Valley Police, and other key partners to get the scheme off the ground, with local residents setting the agenda for what they want to see done. Senior Warden Paul Buckley did the same job in Windsor and Maidenhead, and said: “We have already been out and about removing graffiti, and assessing what work needs doing. The response has been really good, and the youngsters in the area have been really positive.” Tilehurst Parish Council chairman Jean Gardner added: “It’s great to see the van out and about, and improvements being made to our communities. It’s a long term scheme, and a worthwhile investment.” Holybrook Parish Council chairman Bernard Gilbert added: “We have worked with residents to outline the problems we all want to see tackled. People can expect to see real improvements.” The scheme has been paid for by a £105,000 grant from West Berkshire Council, along with £10,000 each from the two parish councils. Sovereign has a few properties in the area, but the wardens are there for everyone who lives in these areas. Sovereign will be using the wealth of experience it has amassed in running the highly successful Newbury warden scheme to make a real difference to the area. Published 27 April 2005 |
