More village homes to tackle local shortage
Residents celebrate

Much-needed affordable homes have been unveiled in Westerleigh thanks to Sovereign Housing Group and South Gloucestershire Council.

The council brought in Sovereign to demolish four 1940s prefab homes riddled with concrete cancer, and replace with five homes, ranging from two to four bedrooms.

The 3,000-strong community of Westerleigh has one of the lowest ratios of affordable homes in the Bristol area, while Westerleigh house prices rose 75% in the last five years, creating strong demand.

Two of the new homes will be let to residents who lived in the old development, leaving three to go to local families. Sovereign worked with them to ensure special needs were catered for, and so they could choose their preferred kitchens, floors, and tiles.

The new homes have several 'green' features, such as recycled newspaper insulation, solar panels, and timber frame construction to keep down carbon emissions.

Sovereign Development Manager Lesley Holding said: "We have worked with the former residents, neighbours, and councillors to deliver homes that are personalised, and right for Westerleigh."

"It's very rewarding providing better quality homes for the returning families, and exciting to be able to install the additional environmentally friendly features."

Andrew Graham, director of housing at South Gloucestershire Council, said: "The opening of these new homes in Westerleigh is very good news for local people. The homes which originally stood on the site were is very poor condition and this is an excellent example of what can be achieved working in partnership with our Housing Association colleagues."

The project was built by Halsall Construction, designed by Kendall Kingscott, with materials from JM Partnership.
