Local estates get shop refurbishment
Newbury's biggest landlord has started work this week to tidy up local shopfronts on some of the area’s older estates. Significantly, the £65,000 programme includes tidying up shops on the Turnpike estate, where residents want the parade of shops to be a focal point for the community. Director of Development and Asset Management Grenville Barr said: “It’s important for shops to be as attractive as possible to keep money and jobs on our estates. On the Nightingales and Turnpike, this is another example of the improvements we can achieve through working together.” The shops included in the programme are The Avon Fish Bar and the Eastern Chef Chinese takeaway, Gaywood Drive; the One Stop store, Avonway; the Greenham Court Store on The Nightingales; Calcot News, C & G News, The Avenue Stores and the Silsila restaurant, all on Royal Avenue, Calcot, and shops in Rowan Drive and Brummell Road, Newbury. The 10-week programme started on Monday with local firm RGC General Builders, using money from both the shopkeepers and Sovereign Housing. Under the arrangement, Sovereign is footing the entire bill, and recharging shopkeepers for just over half the costs in the next 18 months.Published 8 December 2005 |
