Community involvement in Witney
Moving to his new special adapted home in Witney, Oxfordshire, gave Keith Cleal a new lease of life. After 30 years as a coachdriver in the town, Keith developed diabetes four years ago, losing both his legs to the hospital superbug MRSA. Living in a nearby Cotswolds village became more difficult. Keith, 69, recalls: “The hospital nurses suggested I get somewhere new to live, but my wife loves the village and decided to stay. She’s now my official carer, and drives 15 miles every day to see me.” Keith moved into his two-bedroom bungalow with Sovereign Housing Association on the new Madley Park development last January, and has already got involved with the new community. Madley Park is a 1,000-home new estate in Witney, featuring a new school, shops and including140 affordable houses and bungalows. Keith moved into one of four wheelchair-friendly bungalows, and has become an active member of Madley Park Residents’ Association, as well as attending Sovereign’s Quality Action Group on Estate and Tenancy Management. “Everybody’s new here, but there are lots of ways to get involved. I help out at the school with the three Rs, and play bingo with patients at the hospital. My neighbours help by cutting my lawn or getting the newspapers. Most of all, it’s much easier for me to get around.” Published 20 July 2005 |
