Devon paramedic

Trainee Paramedics Chris Lowe and Nicky Oxenham looked into the Homebuy key worker scheme after working out how much they had spent on renting their three-bedroom home.

Cornwood-born Nicky, 31, wanted to stay in the area where she grew up, although she works at Kingsbridge ambulance station.

The couple came to see Sovereign Housing Group, where they learnt they could take an interest-free top-up to their mortgage, allowing them to choose where to live.

Chris, 42, said: “After adding up all the rent we’d paid, we started looking for a place of our own. But we couldn’t afford what we wanted, until we heard about this.

Sovereign’s Homebuy representatives arranged for the couple to borrow an additional £40,000 interest-free, on top of their £119,000 joint mortgage with a commercial lender.

They moved in May, and have been making the most of their three bedroom semidetached in Ivybridge.

In the last 18 months alone, Sovereign Housing Group has helped dozens of key workers get on the property ladder in South Hams.

Sovereign Marketing Coordinator Cath Scollick said: “Homebuy has proved very popular with all age groups of key workers, looking to get a bigger place and be able to choose where to live. It’s also a great way for headteachers, fire chiefs and police inspectors to keep hold of staff in property hotspots like here.”

Both Chris and Nicky are now nicely set up to concentrate on their training to become fully-fledged paramedics.
