Local labour scheme for Barton Hill
One of Bristol’s biggest social landlords is offering local residents the chance to learn a trade on the city’s most innovative redevelopment project. Sovereign Housing Group has teamed up with construction bosses and Community at Heart – the resident-led regeneration company operating in Barton Hill, the Dings and parts of Redfield and Lawrence Hill - on the £18m Barton Hill rebuild, and is coordinating a scheme to give local residents apprenticeships and training opportunities in a building trade. Research suggests Bristol has a major shortage of tradespeople, and Sovereign’s Construction Links Coordinator Julian Thomas reckons the new initiative will help foster a new sense of community in areas like Barton Hill. He said: “We can put these people on track to gain skills, and put something back in their community. In addition, there’s so much work going on in Bristol that builders have to be drafted in from far and wide. This way, more money will stay and be spent in the areas now being regenerated.” In April, Bovis Homes started on the first £3.5m phase of the Barton Hill redevelopment, bringing 26 more affordable homes for Sovereign and Solon Housing Associations. The new homes will replace the two former low-rise tower blocks, Chetwood House and Hartland House s, demolished last year. This and the surrounding regeneration area offers perfect retraining opportunities for young and old alike.
