Flooding problems

Advice for residents who have been flooded

If you are affected by flooding, stay safe and remember that floods can kill so don’t try to walk or drive through floodwater.

Do not switch on gas or electricity supplies until they have been inspected.

Avoid contact with floodwater if you can – it may be contaminated with sewage.

Do not use food which has been in contact with flood water.

Residents who have been flooded and need repairs should ring 0800 587 2325.

We have also set up a Floodline number, 01635 572282. Affected residents can call this number if they have housing-related or insurance enquiries. They can also e-mail floodline@sovereign.org.uk.

Here is some more information on the questions residents are asking us.

Insurance

If you have your own contents insurance, you should contact that company directly.

If you have contents insurance through Sovereign, please ring 01635 572165 or e-mail customer.accounts@sovereign.org.uk, who will you a letter and form.

Although you can remove damaged carpets and so on, please do not get rid of them until you know if the insurance company needs to see them to assess the damage.

Rent

Residents should continue to pay their rent but we will look into issues about rent refunds if homes cannot be lived in.

Redecoration and replacement of kitchens and so on

Property Services staff will survey homes first for safety and we are asking residents to clean up their homes as much as they can. We will be assisting where we can but prioritising those worst affected.

We will decide what to do about redecorating, replacing damaged kitchen units and so on depending on the circumstances but your contents insurance should pay for redecorating costs.

Cleaning up after a flood

Items may have been contaminated with sewage so use precautions.

  • Wear gloves and overalls to cover your clothing.
  • Wash surfaces down with disinfectant.
  • Wash your hands carefully and avoid contact with your eyes and mouth.

There is detailed advice on the Environment Agency’s website at www.environment-agency.gov.uk/subjects/flood/

If you would like a ‘Hippobag' for your damaged possessions (you use it like a small skip), please contact our repairs call centre on 0800 587 2325.
