Sovereign rescues Bournemouth firefighter
![]() Name: Mark Brizland Mark had been renting with a housemate, but started looking to buy himself a home when the friend moved away. But this didn't prove easy as he works for Dorset Fire and Rescue Service. And Mark is based in Christchurch, Bournemouth - one of the most expensive areas of the south. "All I could afford was a bedsit," explained Mark. "I was told to get on to the local council's housing list, who then passed me on to Sovereign Housing." "I knew about housing associations, but I didn't realise that they could help me to buy somewhere. I had an interview and was then able to find a suitable home in the right price bracket. Sovereign were extremely helpful and didn't mind how many times I called." As Mark could afford a 75% share in the sort of flat he was looking for, Sovereign could help with the other 25% of the costs (£24,500) through the Homebuy scheme. This national scheme is available for people on a moderate income who are unable to fund a full mortgage. "I'm better off in the long-run by buying. I've now got myself a flat 10 minutes from work and close to the beach!"Published 04 January 2004 |
