Margaret Langley helped by our
care centre
Chris Skelton and Margaret Langley

Since retired investment banker Derek Langley was diagnosed with dementia seven years ago, his loyal wife Margaret has cared for him. The decision was made early on to stay together at the home they have owned for many years.

Derek is now unstable on his feet, but recently Margaret has been able to enjoy a new lease of life thanks to the care team at Sovereign Housing Association, who installed a warning system to alert Margaret whenever Derek is up and about in case he falls.

The pneumatic mat pager-based system consists of a touch-sensitive mat which can be placed beneath cushions or bedding, which sends a signal to a pager whenever the patient moves out of the seat or bed.

“I am quite good at relaxing,” Margaret, of Chandos Road Newbury says, “and now with the pager, I can do gardening or take a bath without worrying.”

“Now, I have peace of mind knowing that Derek is safe, such as when I have friends around.”

Margaret adds: “Many people who have a partner with dementia are reluctant to accept interference from the various agencies out there. We were the same, but after you’ve realized what help there is, it seems silly not to accept it.

Sovereign has established a reputation providing a range of care systems, from pendants that can call in to the 24 hour care centre, to equipment which is linked direct to family or carers via the pager system. The new pager system is proving popular with carers who look after their partners at home.

Care centre team manager Chris Skelton says: “The new range of equipment is allowing vulnerable people to be able to live at home independently and provides their family and friends with peace of mind that if help is required they are able to call for assistance using the pager or pendant alarm system”
