Barton Hill cottons on to
quality homes

Barton Hill residents enjoyed a street party recently to celebrate swapping high-rise living for spacious family homes.

Residents of 26 new affordable homes at Cotton Mill Lane - formerly the site of two 1960s tower blocks - were joined by neighbours, community police, and politicians for a burger, penalty shoot-out, face-painting and bouncy castle.

The homes mark the first completions in the £50m government-backed regeneration programme, which residents helped design in one of Bristol’s most exciting community-led projects.

Sovereign Housing Regeneration Coordinator Lisa Denison said: “It’s been a lot of hard work but well worth it to see all these smiling faces. This new development symbolises what can happen when local people and public agencies work together.”

Solon Chief Executive Paul Ville added: “Solon Housing is delighted to be working in partnership with Sovereign, Community@Heart, and the local residents to help regenerate Barton Hill by developing good quality affordable homes.

“The success of the street party demonstrates that Cotton Mill Lane already has the making of a thriving local community, and we hope all the residents continue to enjoy living there. We will certainly do our best to encourage this.”

The two landlords are managing 13 homes each, and the £3m project was built by Bovis Homes. For many of the families, it’s the first time they have had access to a garden.
