Information for leaseholders
Picture of leaseholders handbookspacerIf you are a leaseholder or shared owner, this section gives you specific information about your home, what to do if you want to sell and contact details on the Leasehold Services team.

We produce handbooks for leaseholders who live in flats and houses. These give you more information about living in your home. To order one, please use our publications order form.

Buying more shares

If you are a shared-ownership leaseholder, then 'staircasing' is the way you can buy more shares in your home. When you staircase, we will reduce your rent in proportion to the extra share you buy.

For more information about staircasing, please contact your leasehold services officer. Click here to find out who to contact.

Selling your property

If you bought your home before June 2006 then you must have lived in the property for at least three months before selling. There is no restriction for homes bought after June 2006, but please check your lease to make sure.

If you decide to sell your property, or the share you own, you will need to tell us. We then have a period set out in your lease to find a buyer for your home. If we don't find someone within the period, you can sell the property privately.

You will also need to agree the price with us, by providing us with a valuation from a FRICS (Fellow of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors) qualified surveyor. You will need to pay for this valuation.

Under certain leases, you may have to sell your share back to us. If you think this might apply to you, please check your lease or contract.

Paying your rent

If you bought your home through our shared ownership scheme, we will charge you rent based on the percentage of the property we still own.

You are responsible for paying your rent. If you miss payments, you risk losing your home.

Most shared owners pay their rent by Direct Debit. Download an application form here.
