Tradesmen are top of the class
![]() Bricklayers from Sovereign Housing Group demonstrated their skills in a lesson for special needs children at Newbury’s Castle School last week. Around 40 pupils gathered around expert bricklayers Jeff Wild and Jim Black to gain a better understanding in how buildings are made, and why different materials are used. The children heard why ventilation bricks were used, and about the different types of clay used to make them. Teacher Shannon Booth said: “It’s part of the curriculum to learn why different materials are used, and the Sovereign team brought some brick-types that I had never seen before, so we all learnt something new in the end.” Sovereign Property Services Surveyor Sean Chaplin said: “We decided to take a break from our busy programme to help the children learn something new. It proved very rewarding, and we’d happily do it again if asked.” Berkshire’s biggest landlord will also be out and about in local schools over the next few months to offer careers advice on learning a trade.Published 30 January 2006 |
