Thieves - don't let them get away with it!
West Berkshire Neighbourhood Wardens will be doing their bit to cut crime in Tilehurst and Holybrook this week by helping residents protect their bikes and mobile phones from thieves. Every year, hundreds of thousands of mobile phones and bikes are stolen in the UK, with young people especially vulnerable. So, local wardens are at hand to provide advice, security mark bikes and phones and run safety checks on children's bikes. Wardens Sue Reilly, John Harris and Paul Buckley have been patrolling Tilehurst and Holybrook since May to help tackle anti-social behaviour and reduce low-level crime. Senior Neighbourhood Warden, Paul Buckley said: "Security marking and postcoding valuables is a great way of preventing crime. It stops criminals from selling stolen items and increases the chance of items being returned to their owner." "We should do all we can to make theft and burglary as difficult as possible and help make West Berkshire safer." The initiative works by stamping postcodes and door numbers underneath the bottom bracket of a bike and this will be recorded by Police to aid detection if stolen. Ultra-violet pens will be on hand to mark phones, and help provided to record phone details so they can be traced by the networks. Residents can join the Wardens at the main entrance of Sainsbury's in Calcot on Friday 12 August from 10am to 4pm to stamp out thieves. Published 10 August 2005 |
