Taking part ain’t hard to do
More than 40 events are being held over the next 10 days so Newbury’s biggest landlord can learn more about how to improve the quality of life on local estates. Hundreds of Sovereign Housing Association residents are expected to turn out in force to discuss issues like antisocial behaviour, home repairs, and how getting involved can boost community spirit in the Newbury area, helping Sovereign improve services to residents. A resident conference has been organised on May 21 at Newbury Rugby Club (10-1pm), and housing officers will be on hand at Sovereign’s Bartholomew Street HQ on 20 and 23 May to talk face-to-face about the issues that matter. Elsewhere, Mount Road Residents Association have organised an antisocial behaviour summit at St Mary’s Junior School (Saturday 21 st, 2-4pm). Police, firemen, neighbourhood watch, and others will be attending. Estate inspections will be carried out across West Berkshire including in Lambourn, Hungerford, Great Shefford, Greenham and Mortimer to identify problems on estates, so Sovereign can take action. Sovereign Resident Participation Manager Nick Cross said: “There are 27 ways that residents can get involved and help Sovereign provide better services. Even where we can’t help directly, we have the partnerships with those who can.” Following feedback over the last year more than 50 improvements have been suggested by residents, including staffing up Sovereign’s call centre at peak times, and more contract gardeners were hired to improve communal areas. Other residents were also put in touch with developers to help design new schemes. Published 11 May 2005 |
