Village life at half the price
When Stephanie Roberts ended a relationship, it was touch and go whether the office worker and her eight-year-old daughter Hanna would be able to find somewhere to buy in the pricey Oxfordshire village of Kingston Bagpuize. But when Sovereign Housing Group started its latest affordable housing site just down the road, her hopes were raised that she wouldn’t have to start afresh further afield. Stephanie says: “As soon as I saw the site signage, I thought it was the perfect option. I dealt with the same person at Sovereign throughout, so the process was quick and painless. “I got the keys at the start of February and it doesn’t need decorating, so we’re just moving our things in.” Stephanie’s new two-bedroom home at Oxford Close, Kingston Bagpuize, is one of three sold there through Sovereign’s popular part buy, part rent package. Built by local contractors Leadbitter Construction, it features a downstairs toilet, garage bay and a large garden complete with shed. Working as an administrator at an Oxford building firm, Stephanie managed to buy 40% of the £172,500 house, while the rest will be retained by Sovereign - and rented to her at a reduced rate. This ensures that the property can be resold on a part buy, part rent basis again if Stephanie decides to move one day. “Having been a homeowner before, I didn’t really want to rent privately, but buying another house outright would have been a big stretch. This is ideal for women who find themselves making a go of it on their own.” Published 13 February 2007 |
