Somerford residents get to shape their future

New affordable homes and improved community facilities could be the result of plans to regenerate Christchurch’s biggest housing estate and help solve the growing housing crisis in the town.

With Christchurch facing a serious shortage of affordable family houses, the aim of the project is both to improve the quality of homes in Somerford and to make better use of the land to create new much-needed family housing.

Twynham Housing Association is consulting Somerford residents on what improvements they would like to see being made to the neighbourhood. A questionnaire is being delivered this week to every home in the Somerford area.

The initiative has been welcomed by both the Twynham Residents Association and `The Friends of Grange Ward` Community Association.

Twynham’s Managing Director, Marion Franks, said:

“We’re at the start of a lengthy process to find out from all Somerford residents, not just our own tenants, what improvements they want to see and how we can best create a community where people will be proud to live.

“It’s not just about bricks and mortar. We’re confident we can get the community involved with improving the design and layout of the estate, to create a safer and more attractive environment for everyone”.

The consultation will run between now and December across the entire 1500-household estate, and will be assisted by Twynham’s parent organisation – Sovereign Housing Group – which has a strong track record in successfully regenerating estates and neighbourhoods.

Ms Franks added: “It’s a unique opportunity for all residents to have a direct input into designing the kind of community they want to live in.”

The results of the survey will be presented to Somerford residents and local agencies at a public meeting in July following which a series of local cluster groups will focus on different areas for improvement in more detail. Twynham hopes to have costed proposals for the estate’s regeneration ready by this time next year.
