From caravan to dream cottage

Pat Broomespacer Living in one of 200 mobile homes in the Reading suburb of Tilehurst wasn't Patricia Broome's retirement dream, and with soaring house prices making a move ever more unlikely, but with Sovereign Housing she's found peace and quiet in the rolling Berkshire countryside.

After a short time on the waiting list, Mrs Broome was offered a 200-year-old cottage next to the burbling River Pang at Bradfield.

“I didn’t know what to expect, but it’s so nice,” says Pat, “I sit in my garden and watch the ducks and trout go by. I just don’t want to be anywhere else.”

Riverside Cottages are thought to be on the site of the medieval village bakery, and were threatened with demolition some years ago. Today, after careful maintenance by Sovereign, Pat can relax every day in her garden.

Asset Manager Dave Ingram adds: “A lot of people think of social housing as 1950s council homes, but we have a huge range of homes to suit different lifestyles. Of course these are very picturesque and don’t come up very often, and when they do they’re snapped up.”
