Older people are ‘safe as houses’ with Sovereign
Elderly residentspacer Newbury's biggest landlord has been praised for providing some of the best support for the elderly and domestic violence victims in West Berkshire.

A review of standards of care at 24 sheltered schemes across the district rated Sovereign Housing Association’s services as “excellent” across the board – the highest grade possible.

West Berkshire Council inspected Sovereign in September to see if government funding to keep people living independently for longer was working. The report rated the Bartholomew Street-based housing association ‘excellent’ at assessing needs, protecting residents from abuse, handling complaints, planning support packages, and being inclusive.

Sovereign’s Head of Supported Housing Heather Bowman said: “We reformed the services we provide to be more flexible and professional, and we are delighted to have received an official endorsement of our progress.”

The council interviewed 88 residents and found that some sheltered schemes don’t meet the aspirations of residents, confirming Sovereign’s decision to spend £10m on a new complex for the over-55s at Carnarvon Place, Newbury, to replace outdated accommodation at three nearby schemes.

However, the study found some residents felt they didn’t need care alarms, home visits or other extra help. As a result, Sovereign is now exploring how it can expand this excellent service, and offer support to residents who don’t live in sheltered schemes.
