New name for a new development

Midas Homes and South Hams District Council are pleased to announce that the new development in Totnes, previously referred to as 'Totnes Southern Area', has been named South Gate, following a ‘name the development’ competition.

Suggested by Mrs Kathleen Norcott from Dartmouth, the name South Gate was selected as it reflected the development’s locality.

Kathleen was presented with some high street vouchers for winning the competition outside the new notice board, which has been erected by the Heath Nursery car park. She was met by: Councillor Isabelle Steer, the lead on affordable housing; Councillor John Tucker, Deputy Leader and the lead member for Property and Assets; Sharon Holder, Sales Manager from Midas Homes; and Carey Pill from Sovereign Housing.

Speaking at the presentation, Kathleen said: “I am thrilled to have won the competition and am very happy to be associated with the new development at Totnes.”

South Hams District Council selected Midas Homes as its development partner for the redevelopment of Totnes Southern Area Phase 2 - a scheme that will create high quality new homes for the Totnes community.

Designed by architects’ Harrison Sutton Partnership, Midas Homes will work with South Hams District Council and Sovereign Housing to create 51 new one, two, three and four bedroom homes. The properties will comprise a mix of apartments, houses, coach houses and townhouses, and in response to local housing needs at least a half will be classed as affordable. The company will also build one and refurbish two commercial units for South Hams District Council.

South Gate comprises four separate areas namely: Lamb North, Lamb South, Heathway East and Heathway West. The main construction works will commence on Lamb South this month, with a rollover of construction on all four sites up to the completion of the development at the end of 2008.

The scheme has already won a National Housebuilder Design Award for its design and will provide eco-friendly homes for the Totnes community.

Midas Homes and South Hams District Council would like to thank everyone who entered the competition.
