Town centre site will create wider
choice of homes

Sovereign Housing Group has unveiled plans to replace 39 cramped old bungalows and flats with a wider choice of housing in Newbury town centre.

With the £18m sheltered complex at Carnarvon Place nearing completion, the 1960s bungalows at Willow Close, and adjacent Malvern Court, will become surplus. Sovereign has applied to replace the 39 homes with 43 modern family homes and apartments.

Although Sovereign will sell the sites to pay for Carnarvon Place, 15 houses will be retained to provide much-needed family accommodation.

Features of the scheme include:

  • Creating a wider choice of housing for all stages of life
  • Creates a tree-lined crescent facing protected open space
  • Curved balconies and corners on the end-blocks of flats
  • Only 21 extra car trips per day predicted, as walking and cycling to work is more popular in this part of town
  • At 40 houses per hectare, it’s half the density of most redevelopment schemes in central Newbury
  • Garages, driveways and parking forecourts should eliminate on-street parking
  • Extensive tree-planting to enhance this gateway into the town
  • Generate considerable contributions to help restore the nearby cemetery
