Partnership helps homeless in Highbridge

Families in Highbridge are settling into new homes

Families in Highbridge are settling into new homes this week after the completion of a major affordable housing project in the town, which was opened by the Chairman of Sedgemoor District Council, Councillor John Denbee.

The former Normans supermarket site off Church Street has been given a new lease of life with the arrival of 42 new homes, delivered through a partnership between Sovereign Housing Group, Sedgemoor District Council and Barratt Homes.

These homes have been allocated to people in housing need from Sedgemoor District Council's Housing Register, which includes people are homeless.

The £4.7m project has provided 13 rented and 27 part-buy part-rent homes for those most in need in the area and residents were welcomed into their new homes by the partnership recently.

Councillor Paul Herbert, Sedgemoor’s Portfolio Holder for Housing said: "It’s fantastic to see this project completed and families moving in. Working with other partners, we hope to be able to provide more affordable housing across the district. However, we do need people to be on our register so that we can consider their individual needs."

Sovereign funded the project with the help of a £407,000 grant from the council and a further £510,000 in government subsidy via the Housing Corporation, to help regenerate the site after Norman’s supermarket closed four years ago.

Along with providing more rented homes, the part-buy part-rent homes are proving popular as a way for families and couples and individuals to get on the housing ladder without breaking the bank.

Sovereign marketing manager Anna Snow said: "We have a range of apartments and houses to suit those on low incomes, and as long as local people can prove they can’t afford a house at full price, we should be able to help.

"As more and more people in the area realise that renting privately is dead money, they are coming to us to see how they can buy a place for as little as £32,000. If anyone wants to talk further, they can call us on 0845 602 1618."
