A helping hand against noisy neighbours

Local agencies are teaming up to tackle one of Plymouth’s biggest problems by offering help for residents suffering from noisy neighbours.

To mark Noise Action Week (21-25 May), Sovereign Housing Association and partners are running a competition in Barne Barton, to find out what racket drives people up the wall the most.

With up to 40% of the population* fed up with noisy neighbours – most often barking dogs, loud music, or the din of DIY – Sovereign, along with Plymouth City Council, Devon & Cornwall Housing Association, William Sutton Trust, Sanctuary Housing Association, Plymouth Mediation and Devon and Cornwall police, will be on hand to offer hints and tips to help Greenham residents sort out their problems.

Noise can cause disruption and distress to everyone - at home, at leisure, at work and at study. There is no doubt that our capacity to make noise is increasing. National research shows that noise control officers across the UK think that incompatible lifestyles and high expectation of quiet are the reasons for many complaints. Noise affects everyone’s quality of life, and the number of noise complaints is increasing.

Sovereign antisocial behaviour coordinator Rebecca Horne said: “A lot of people still don’t realise that they don’t have to put up with noisy neighbours. These days, the police, landlords and councils all have more powers to take action against inconsiderate neighbours.

“We’ve got some samples of noise to test out on residents, to find out what annoys them the most. Most of all, we’re not here to lecture people, but to support those who suffer in silence.”

The Evening of Noise will feature a “who can shout the loudest” competition, prizes and giveaways for children, and refreshments. It will be hosted at Tamar View Community Resource Centre, Miers Close, St Budeaux, on 24 May 5-7pm. All welcome.

Top tips to keep the peace

Turn it down

Keep the stereo and TV volumes at a reasonable level, and place speakers away from neighbours walls, and off the floor if possible.

Don’t hammer it home

Don’t start DIY or household chores too early or late, especially at weekends.

Make your party peace

Warn your neighbours in advance if you’re having a party or lively barbecue.

Don’t leave pets barking mad

Dogs often bark or whine when left alone for long periods or they’re lonely. Make arrangements to let them out during the day.

Lose the heels

Wearing heels on laminate flooring drives many people mad. Swap them for slippers when in the house.
