Bubbly for bubbles!
Violet Hill and Gladys Rolfe

Violet Hill has been named Sovereign’s Superneighbour of the Year after her friend Gladys Rolfe told of how much she had been cared for after a recent fall.

Violet, or ‘Bubbles’ as she’s known, and Gladys have been neighbours for 12 years. Recently, Gladys has not been well, but Bubbles could always be found cooking, shopping and helping out while Gladys, aged 86, recovered.

Gladys, of Hawthorn Road, spent last Christmas and New Year in West Berkshire Hospital recovering from a broken hip. But Bubbles was always on hand with fresh clothes and a smile to keep her spirits up.

She also called the doctors and relatives when Gladys fell ill with pneumonia, and made sure her home was warm and clean for her return.

The heartfelt letter from Gladys persuaded judges that Bubbles was ‘one in a million’, so Sovereign presented Bubbles with champagne and a hamper last week. Gladys received a bouquet for nominating her.

Gladys said: “I’m so pleased with this. She’s one in a million. I don’t know where I’d be without her.”

Bubbles said: “I am over the moon. I don’t mind helping Gladys out. We go back years.”

Sovereign search for a ‘neighbour from heaven’ drew entries from far and wide, whether older gentlemen doing odd jobs around the village, or friendly mums keeping an eye on the local children.

Sovereign Area Housing Manager Sarah Pallister said: “We hear so much about neighbours who don’t get on. But there's a great sense of community spirit on many of our estates, with neighbours becoming friends and making a real difference to each other's lives."
