Sovereign Housing Group and United Housing Association, and city councillors met new residents and neighbours to celebrate the turnaround

Two Bristol landlords have teamed up with local residents to turn an antisocial behaviour hotspot into much-needed affordable family homes.

Bristol City Council moved swiftly when a group of Kingsweston neighbours complained of arson and vandalism of garages in Windcliff Crescent, and after consulting residents, arranged for the site to be redeveloped for social housing.

Last Friday, the landlords behind the 12-house scheme, Sovereign Housing Group and United Housing Association, and city councillors met new residents and neighbours to celebrate the turnaround.

Sovereign Housing Group Chief Executive Ann Santry said: “This is great news for the residents, and puts brownfield land to good use. We’ve worked closely with neighbours, and have now handed over the keys on 12 properties for local families most in need.”

United Housing Association chief executive Darshan Matharoo added: “It just shows what can be achieved by working together. With the help of Sovereign and the council, we’ve turned a problem into a solution. And if our tenants are happy, then I’m happy.”

The site has been named Boon Villas after George Boon, the archaeologist who discovered the 3 rd Century Roman Villa nearby, when the Lawrence Weston estate was built after the end of the Second World War.

There are 12 two, three and four bedroom houses replacing the 1960s garage block, arranged in sympathetic design to the estate by Leadbitter Construction and JM Partnership.

Councillor Gary Hopkins, chair of the Safer Bristol Partnership, which spearheads the city's response to crime, drugs and community safety, said: "I welcome the redevelopment of this site which is very good news for the local community and an excellent example of prompt partnership work in action."

Sovereign will be on hand to answer questions about the plans at Hungerford Town Council next Thursday, at the town hall, 7.30pm.
