Over 55s in line for the best new flats in town
Work has begun to create some of the most sophisticated living accommodation for older people in Newbury. Contractors for Sovereign Housing Association moved on site at Andover Road earlier this month. They have started building 15 apartments for shared ownership, and 85 apartments for rent. The £9.7m development will see 100 spacious apartments completed by October next year – all built to environmentally friendly standards, with communal gardens, lifts and controlled access. Sovereign’s Development Manager Mark Evans said: “Our pioneering design, and features like the atrium, will make this one of the best places for older people to live in Newbury. We want residents and neighbours to be happy with what they see.” The first phase is the completion of the apartment block in the car park opposite the main site. Sovereign is in talks with West Berkshire Council to purchase the disused public toilets, so they can be demolished to landscape the area. Proposals to name the site off Old Newtown Road Horsefair Close are being sent to West Berks Council, in memory of the annual equine fair held on the site in medieval times. A name for the main site has yet to be determined.Published 24 May 2005 |
