Artists can make their mark with Sovereign
Newbury’s biggest landlord is offering budding local artists the chance to make their mark by designing a centrepiece sculpture for the town’s top-of-the-range apartments for older people. Sovereign Housing Group wants to celebrate its flagship £10m Carnarvon Place development, on the site of the former district hospital, with a memorable piece of public art, and the search for the best design starts today. Strong competition is expected from the local art community for the £5000 commission to come up with a concept that will encapsulate both the past history and present use of the site. The finished piece will be unveiled to 85 residents by Lord Carnarvon of Highclere Castle later in the year. Sovereign spokesman Steve Murphy said: “Carnarvon Place is very different to anything we’ve done before, and we want to do something special to mark the occasion when the first residents move in. “As Newbury is our home town, we would love someone locally to design a one-off piece for our residents to enjoy in years to come. As you’ll see at sovereign.org.uk, there’s some great ideas to get people started.” The deadline is June 16, when Sovereign will shortlist, with residents helping to choose the winner. Sovereign bought the Andover Road site from the NHS two years ago, and is building 85 one and two bedroom apartments for the over 55s. The first residents to move in are from outdated bedsits, flats and bungalows nearby, who can look forward to feeling safer, and having extra space for visitors to stay over.Published 25 May 2006 |
