Nuisance neighbours evicted by people power

A Thatcham couple have been handed two Antisocial Behaviour Orders (ASBO) and evicted from their home after subjecting neighbours to threats and violence.

Nine neighbours went to court to testify against Wayne Searle and his partner Lucinda Sharp, of Matthews Close, after terrorising the neighbourhood and ignoring repeated warnings from landlord Sovereign Housing Association about their behaviour.

In a rare step, Sovereign secured ASBOs against both Mr Searle and Miss Sharp in July, ahead of a two-day eviction hearing at Reading Crown Court on August 30 and 31. The court had heard of a catalogue of complaints including damage to property, and attacks on neighbours.

Today, Sovereign staff visited the property to change the locks and fix metal grills, and have thanked the neighbours for helping secure the eviction.

Area Housing Manager Jill Povall said: “This couple were a nightmare for many people in Matthews Close and surrounding streets, and as they ignored repeated warnings, when trouble escalated again in June 2007, we decided to evict them.

“These are complex and difficult cases for all involved, but we couldn’t have done it without the help of the neighbours who stood up in court to testify, which is never easy.

“The police have been made aware of the ASBO restrictions, and if Mr Searle or Miss Sharp return to the area, they’ll face another prosecution.

“We now hope that the people of Matthews Close can enjoy a peaceful life, now that this family have gone. But we will take further action if any antisocial behaviour is committed by other residents.”
