Landlord on hand to cut DIY risks
Dozens of homes in Christchurch are being tested for asbestos this week in a bid to prevent home improvement enthusiasts putting themselves at risk. Twynham Housing Association has hired consultants to assess older properties in the Somerford area, and the social landlord has produced a handy leaflet to give residents peace of mind if they’re planning DIY jobs. Asbestos is thought to be present in thousands of homes, shops and offices across the country, and as long as it is undisturbed, it doesn’t pose a hazard for people. But if disturbed, dust particles can cause serious injury. Twynham Asset Manager Ian Taylor said: “Somerford has buildings from many different periods, and as a responsible landlord, we need to get an accurate picture of how extensive the situation is. “This is a routine affair, and we don’t want people to panic. But it’s important that we know where there might be asbestos, for when we undertake repairs. The work – carried out by ACE Consultants – started last week, and each house takes up to two hours to inspect. So far, nothing hazardous has been discovered, but residents can report loose or disturbed building materials on 0800 169 5686.Published 3 March 2006 |
